EU Regulatory Framework & Homologation

In the European Union, trailer couplings are considered critical safety components. They cannot be sold or retrofitted without formal type-approval.

Regulation (EU) 2018/858: The overarching framework for the approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles.
UN ECE Regulation No. 55 (ECE R55): The specific technical directive governing the mechanical coupling components of combinations of vehicles. It dictates the design, testing, and dimensional criteria.
E-Marking: Every approved coupling must bear a permanent type-approval mark consisting of a circle surrounding the letter ‘E’ followed by the distinguishing number of the country which has granted approval (e.g., E1 for Germany, E4 for Netherlands, E11 for UK/UNECE context).

Component Classifications (Per ECE R55)

ECE R55 strictly categorizes coupling components based on their geometry and vehicle application:
